BACK-PAIN APPOINTMENT GUIDE

A better way to describe your back discomfort.

“My back hurts” starts the conversation. A few specific details can make that conversation much more useful. This guide helps you organize information for a visit without trying to diagnose the cause.

01

Start with a timeline

Think about when you first noticed a change. Was it during a particular task, after an activity or gradually over several days? Record what you remember without trying to force it into a diagnosis. If the discomfort has come and gone, explain that pattern.

Include any previous assessment or treatment. Note whether something helped, made no difference or was difficult to continue. This history gives the clinician context that a single pain score cannot provide.

02

Describe the effect on your routine

What is different now? You might be sitting differently, avoiding a particular movement or changing how you sleep. Describe the activity and the difficulty rather than assuming what tissue is involved.

Tell the clinician about symptoms outside the back too. Do not leave out something because you are unsure it is related. The practitioner can decide which details are relevant to the assessment.

03

Bring questions about the plan

Ask what the examination suggests, what options are available and what the proposed approach is intended to change. Ask how benefits, risks and alternatives apply to your health history.

You can also ask how progress will be assessed. A meaningful goal might relate to a daily task or an activity, rather than only a number on a scale. The right goal is individual and should be discussed during care.

04

Confirm the practical details

Call before your visit to ask about fees, appointment availability and which records to bring. If you are already receiving care elsewhere, explain that. Do not stop prescribed treatment based on something you read online.

This checklist is for appointment preparation. It cannot determine why your back hurts or whether chiropractic care is right for you. New or concerning symptoms need an appropriate clinical assessment.

General information for appointment preparation, not a diagnosis or individual treatment recommendation.
